​Summary: This 8-hour course teaches the essential knowledge, skills, and attitude required for the safe and effective use of a handgun for self-defense and family protection. It covers defensive shooting skills, home safety strategies, legal aspects of self-defense, and the selection of a self-defense handgun. The course is designed for experienced shooters and law-abiding adult citizens.
Prerequisite:
  • Course is intended for law-abiding adult citizens and experienced shooters
  • Participants must demonstrate proficiency in basic gun handling, shooting, and firearm maintenance
  • Accepted proof of proficiency includes:
    • NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate
    • NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate
    • NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card
    • Military DD 214 with pistol qualification
    • Passing the Pre-Course Assessment
Classroom Instruction:
  1. Basic Defensive Shooting Skills:
    • Techniques and principles of defensive handgun use
  2. Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation:
    • Planning and preparation for home defense
    • Effective response tactics
  3. Firearms and the Law:
    • Legal aspects of self-defense and firearm use
    • Conducted by a qualified attorney, Law Enforcement Officer (LEO), or certified instructor meeting state-specific requirements
  4. Choosing a Handgun for Self-Defense:
    • Factors to consider when selecting a self-defense handgun
Practical Shooting Exercises:
  • Shooting approximately 100 rounds of ammunition
  • Application of defensive shooting techniques learned in the classroom
